Here’s your personal sneak peek at my collection of winter items. Looking into my crystal ball, I can see each of them becoming part of a playground for our backyard birds and critters. As you look at the photos, be sure to bring your imagination with you! It needs to paint a snowy background. By the way, my photography isn’t just for me; it’s for YOU! At the end, I’d like to know which item(s) most interest you.
This winter gnome melts my heart! He’s a creation of Karen DeHaven of Last Chance Wood Products. I couldn’t resist the color of this little guy’s hat. The red will really ‘pop’ against the snow. It’s also the perfect perch for a bird! What you can’t see is just as charming. The gnome rests on an antique metal bed spring. He needs a name…Hmmm. Any ideas?

We all love warm cookies straight from the oven. (Did your mouth start to water a little?) This little gingerbread amputee isn’t going to be any happier when he’s placed outside. I have a small rolling pin with red handles to balance the scene. I can also see a small plate of gingerbread cookies along with a glass of milk. It would be totally hilarious if a chickadee landed on his head! Just another reason to be grumpy!
This little guy was a Christmas gift from my niece Kristin when she was just a kid.
My mom made cocoa from scratch in the 1960’s and 70’s. Of course, it was Hershey’s! Did you notice the cup and the Hershey’s tin are about the same size? The Hershey’s tin is a much smaller version of the one usually seen. Both the cocoa tin and the cup are fabulous perching places for birds. I might put a hint of ice skates in the background. It’s easy to add too much; simplicity is genius.
The cup came from a vendor of vintage items at the Covered Bridge Festival (Columbia-Montour). The Hershey’s tin was probably from antique shop in Adamstown. Both together cost less than $10.
Who doesn’t remember A Charlie Brown Christmas? (Anybody out there already feeling sentimental?) We all treasure the straggly little Christmas tree. The tree’s a bit tall at 14”. Imagine the top of the tree bent to the ground by the little red ornament with a bird gazing at it. The ornament broke, so I’ve got to find a new one soon.

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care…” (Just curious…How much of the poem can you recite???) Red is a wonderful pop of color against snow. These tiny matching mittens and stockings were a custom order from H & P Embroidery. I’d love to stuff the stocking and have a bird looking inside. I’ve tried hanging the stocking in the past. Maybe this time it will lay on the ground with tiny wrapped packages spilling out.

Oh, how I love this trio of natural birch candles! The tallest has a second branch that sticks out at an angle. What a perfect perch! A downy woodpecker might even climb a candle. Surround these with winter greenery and berries…picture perfect. One of the challenges will be keeping the candles lit.

This trio of sweeties was irresistible. They’re much smaller than the gnome shown earlier. That means the bird will become a larger part of the photo. Imagine using just the one with the snowflake hat. Maybe there could be another one peeking out from behind a tree. These gnomes are mass produced and probably from China. (Ugh!) However, they have the perfect ‘look’!
The gnomes were found at the 272 Antiques & Collectibles Marketplace for just $3.
If you haven’t noticed, I can be a bit random. This is not a winter photo. In fact, it’s one I hope I can capture before snow. Of course, there’s a story behind this one. Two kids (siblings) visited our booth at Crafts in the Meadow (Tyler Park, PA). The boy was disappointed that I didn’t have a card that picked on sisters. I hate disappointing kids! I found the perfect quote: “You won the genetic lottery by being born as my sister.” That calls for something to do with the lottery…like colorful, ping pong sized Bingo balls. The character will definitely be a squirrel! I hope to be chasing ping pong balls soon! LOL!

Hershey’s created a retro tin back when tins were an ‘in thing’. It’s the perfect container for a winter bouquet. Even the chickadee is excited about it. Did you spot his tiny tuft?
