Jasper was flying perimeter patrol when he was stopped in mid-flight. He perched on the cool jadeite, his chores forgotten. His rusty cap tilted in wonder at the petaled wilderness. He didn’t move. He didn’t even chirp. He simply stood still, caught in breathless wonder.

The Story Behind the Shot
This moment was captured during my favorite window of spring when our flowerbeds are in full, vibrant bloom. The magenta peonies, yellow and purple iris, catmint, and columbine were all harvested right here on our property. I love using vintage kitchen objects like these jadeite measuring cups in my photography; they are practical, beautiful things once handled by so many hands to create delicious family meals. Jasper was one half of a chipping sparrow pair that nested with us that year. While he looks captivated by the flowers, there were a few 'secret snacks' tucked away inside that jadeite cup just for him.
