To the Thimbletons, the quilt was a memory of every season they had weathered together. Each patterned square reminded them of a different memory: the faded floral patch was the morning of their first nest, and the deep blue scrap was the shade of the midsummer sky. Clara’s claw was steady on the pearl pin. What new patches would Clement help her add this season?

The Story Behind the Shot
The inspiration for this piece began with a cherished family heirloom: a vintage quilt handmade by Brian’s grandmother. The craftsmanship is staggering, featuring unbelievably tiny triangles and perfectly matched seams. It is a true patchwork quilt, constructed from scraps of old clothing and printed flour mill sacks. To complement the heritage of the fabric, I created a custom pincushion using a vintage enamel cup. When I first looked at this photograph, I thought Clara’s claw was deformed. However, when I looked more closely, I realized she was actually grasping the top of the pearl pin. Since the photograph features a bluebird pair, I was delighted to discover this quote about marriage.
