The Pennywhistle wrens chose the garden's oldest guardian for their nursery. The relic pulsed with brand new beginnings. Thatcher hovered quietly above the pump. It was a rare gift to witness the miracle unfolding within the rust.

The Story Behind the Shot

Wrens always seem to choose unexpected places for their nurseries, like this pump, hanging pots or even old mailboxes. The bluebird hovering in the top right corner makes this photograph unique from all my others

This piece is also a journey back to a simpler time. I remember needing every bit of muscle to work a heavy pump handle. The squeaky sound of the iron as it worked still hangs in my mind. The water that finally gushed out always tasted so much better because of the work involved. Long ago, a pump like this would have been in someone's kitchen. Back then, you couldn't just turn a tap for a glass of water. The pump is surrounded by the vibrant blooms of spring. A real wren’s nest was purchased from Mary’s Gift Shop. The busy little builders had even woven in some horsehair from the farm.
