Ernesta heard the faint tick-tick-tick coming from the old watch. Her nest building was already three days behind schedule. The eggs wouldn't wait; Nesta paused for just a moment anyway. She fluffed her feathers, tilting her head to get a closer look at the bleeding hearts. She wondered if the little clock could somehow make the sun stay up just a few minutes longer. Time is a strange thing when you are waiting for a miracle.

The Story Behind the Shot
This lovely bouquet is handpicked from my own flowerbeds: pale pink peonies, white phlox, white deutzia with some Heavenly Bamboo leaves. The pale colors set off one little string of pink bleeding hearts. The soft palette of this scene sets it apart from anything else in my portfolio; but the true crowning moment was Nesta herself.  It’s rare to find such a perfectly round ball of fluff at the feeding platform. Most birds treat my garden like a fast-food drive-thru—always sleek, always in a hurry, and keeping the engine running for a quick getaway.
