Spring's soft light illuminated the vintage gravy boat, now a bluebird home. They’d chosen the gravy boat for its unique charm, ignoring the cavity in the old oak. Papa kept watch over the unusual spotted egg. A faint tapping sound echoed from within. The gravy boat wobbled.

The Story Behind the Shot

I found this gravy boat at Renninger’s in Adamstown, drawn to its delicate pattern. It sat in our garage for a long time before it finally struck my fancy as the perfect spot for a spring nest. The periwinkles, tulips, and bleeding hearts all came from our own flower beds. I especially love how the bleeding hearts arch perfectly over the nest, and I added pussy willows because I’ve loved their soft touch since I was a child. The small egg was bought specifically for this scene; I believe it is a quail egg. A bluebird visitor couldn’t resist stopping by to check out the neighboring nest.
