From a hatchling, Martin was gifted with musical talent. He especially loved performing at dawn with the man on the porch. Early each morning the man picked and plucked soft melodies out of a guitar. Martin’s twittering and warbling created a beautiful counterpoint. Hello, morning! It’s a brand new day!

The Story Behind the Shot
One of the greatest joys of traveling to craft shows is the wonderful people we meet along the way. During one of those conversations, I mentioned my vision for a series of photographs featuring musical instruments. This kind-hearted couple suggested using a guitar. Since a full-sized instrument would have completely dwarfed a small songbird, they recommended a half-size guitar. They went a step further by providing the instrument for the shoot free of charge. I am so grateful to these generous friends, who prefer to remain anonymous, for helping me bring this musical vision to life.

Are you wondering why a bird would land on a guitar like this? The birds are used to finding treats in this spot; they make themselves at home whenever I set up a new scene. I generally hide their snacks out of sight. In this instance, the guitar didn't provide a hiding spot and the food remained visible.  Since the sunflower seeds detracted from the magic of the moment. I used Photoshop to hand-edit the treats out of the frame.

The forest is full of aspiring musicians. While the birds practiced their scales, Brian caught a very enthusiastic squirrel attempting a solo on the strings. It’s a sight you have to see to believe!
