The Story Behind the Shot
This piece began with a box of "treasures" from a local auction. Among a group of old oil lamps was this simple finger lamp. It still held a small amount of oil from its previous life, which created a stunning, unexpected reflection when I finally brought it into the light.
Because our home is surrounded by dense woods, we only get a clear view of the sunrise during the winter months. After a fresh snowfall, the lighting was finally right. I placed the lamp so the winter sun would sit perfectly within the glass chimney.
The dramatic silhouette of the dark woods against the morning light creates a powerful contrast. While it looks like a lit flame, the lamp actually has no wick; the "fire" is the sun itself. This photograph touches the soul of so many people. For me, it is a visual representation of Psalm 113:3, "From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised."
