A forest giant required so much heavy gear to walk the winding mountain path. From the ground, the trail was a slow, steady conversation with the earth. Skylar, however, could see a shortcut written in the wind. It was time to find the place where the earth ends and the blue begins.

The Story Behind the Shot
The soul of this photo started with an eBay hunt. I searched until I found these perfect little boots. The feet that lived in them had a story to tell. I had so much fun building a miniature trail for them using fresh ferns, moss, and lichen-covered branches from our woods. (You can probably guess where the snacks were hidden!) Many birds visited the set, but Skylar was the star. There was a curious tilt of his head and a distinct twinkle in his eye. Often, adding the quote is the very last thing I do. John Muir’s famous words—"The mountains are calling and I must go"—felt like the perfect match to complete the story.
